How To Do What You Like- What Is Success In Life

Have you ever stopped to think about how you define success? I read a lot of books for personal development or self help books for success, I listen to success audio programs and watch videos for self improvement but until recently I hadn’t thought about how I define success. In other words, what is success in life, not just at work or in business or financially but what is it that I’m doing it all for.

Your Definition Of Success

So what is your definition of success? The best definition of success I’d heard was in a book called The Wisdom Of Success by Napoleon Hill and it was Andrew Carnegie’s definition which was “Success is the power with which to acquire whatever one demands of life without violating the rights of others”. But this definition wasn’t mine and I decided that I had to create my own definition, regardless of whether it is as good as others or not unique.

So here it is, to me, success is doing what you like. Pretty simple and not really earth shattering is it? If you know how to do what you like and you spend your time doing it then you’re successful (according to me). Is it possible to do what you like all the time? Probably not, but I’ve made a decision that it doesn’t matter what I’m doing I’m going to do my best to enjoy it. I’ve decided being happy is the ultimate success. Do what you like and like what you do.

Why It’s Important To Create Your Own Definition

You should create your own definition of success just like you create your own goals because otherwise you’ll be trying to measure up to someone else’s definition by default. If you don’t decide what it is you want society will tell you, you need to achieve this and this and this or you’re a failure, even if it’s not what you want. Too many people are in jobs they don’t like, relationships they are not happy in and spending time doing things that don’t make them happy just because it’s the norm or because it’s what they’ve always done.

It May Sound Simple But It’s Not Always Easy

Knowing how to do what you like is one thing, actually doing it is another. There may be a period of time when if you’re transitioning from a situation you’re not happy with (like a job or relationship) to something new you’ll have have to be patient as you may need to learn new skills or resolve difficulties that will require patience, determination and persistence to resolve. It won’t happen overnight but it will happen (if you don’t give up and learn from your temporary defeats).dont-quit

I work in sales and while I have always enjoyed working in sales I’ve decided that I want to build an online business in my spare time with the intention of eventually earning the equivalent of my full time income (or more) from my online business so that I can work from home and have more control over my time. But right now I can’t quit my full time job because I have financial responsibilities that require me to have a certain level of income, so I’ve started my online business part time and I will need to have patience, dedication, persistence and the ability to keep learning so I can achieve my goal.

 A Simple Formula

This formula will help achieve anything you want in life and it comes to you courtesy of Napoleon Hill and Andrew Carnegie

  1. Decide exactly what you want, you need to be very specific
  2. Develop a burning desire to achieve your goal. Become obsessed to the point where people will think “this guy/girl is crazy” Wishing and hoping will achive nothing
  3. Create a plan to achieve your goal. If you fail at your first attempt accept it as feedback that you need to create better plans, don’t change your goal. Life is constantly giving you feedback, you just need to listen.
  4. Persist until you succeed. It’s impossible to fail if you don’t quit

What is your definition of success?

I’ve given you my definition of success, I would love to know what is success in life to you. I bet if you ask one hundred people you’ll get one hundred different answers. Feel free to leave your comment below and thank you for reading.

  1. Hi Diego, thanks for this article. I like the authenticity in giving your own answer to what success is. I wish you all the best with the path you have chosen for yourself.

    • Hi Roux, thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you liked this post, feel free to leave a comment anytime. I wish you all the best too. Cheers

  2. Great article Diego! I agree that success to everyone is different. And that it’s important to know your definition. I was in sales as well. Wasn’t to good during my time though lol.
My definition of success is having a goal and achieving that goal. If you achieve that goal you are successful in it. Never stop having goals and always have a “bigger than you” goal for humanity that you may not accomplish in your lifetime. Always work toward it.
    Thats just mine.

    • Thanks Seth, great definition of success. I like the “always have a bigger than you goal”, that’s awesome. Feel free to stop by and leave a comment any time. Cheers

  3. Awesome read. I read many books on this subject. I am a big fan of John Maxwell. You make some great points in this article. Thanks for sharing !

    • Thanks for stopping by and the feedback Justin. I’ve only recently discovered John Maxwell when I came across “How Successful People Think”, great read so I’ll be checking out some of his other books. Cheers

  4. Love this post, sometimes success is just getting out of bed in the morning. Success to me is feeling good about myself and what I am doing. Thanks for sharing.

    • You’re absolutely right Helen, we’re all at different levels. I work with people that coming to work on time would be considered success for them, lol. Thanks for your comment

  5. I see success as being able to achieve what you set out to do, as simple as that. Success may mean getting that promotion that you have been waiting for or achieving that sales target that you have been aiming at. Or it can mean the little achievements that we experience in our daily lives – seeing our kids make their first friends in school or finally being able to plant those flowers in our backyard. Personally success is being able to fulfill our dreams while developing and nurturing great relationships along the way.

    • Thanks for your comment Kathy. I completely agree with you that success changes depending on your situation, I know someone who says “if I open my eyes in the morning and I’m still here, it’s a great day”. To him being alive is success. Cheers

  6. My definition of success is getting paid to do something you love everyday. One of the most motivational things I have ever heard was “When you find the right job, you’ll never have to work a day in your life”. I can’t remember where I saw that but it really stuck with me and thats been my ultimate goal ever since.

    • Great definition of success Dan. If you like what you’re doing you don’t really pay much attention to how much time you spend doing it because it doesn’t feel like work. Thanks for sharing

  7. This is a really intriguing post. “make your own definitions” I LOVE IT! And I also really like your Don’t quit icon. Not giving up is highly important learning a new skill, and that is exactly what I’m doing. Thanks for the insight!

    • Thanks for the feedback Darcy, I appreciate it. I think persistence is one the most important traits anyone can develop, too many people give up because they don’t succeed quickly but maybe they just need to change the way they go about achieving that goal. Cheers

  8. Great post, Diego. I think you’re right on the money when you say “don’t quit.”
It’s especially true for those of who are trying to learn the online business. It can be very overwhelming at times, especially if it’s not in your background. Like you, I hope to build a solid business. Still new, still learning. Sometimes, want to quit but won’t. Stay strong. Best of luck

    • You’re right Brian, whenever you are trying to learn something new it’s difficult unless you’re a natural (which I’m not), it takes time, effort and persistence to keep going. Don’t quit if you’re passionate about building an online business because you’ll probably regret later. There have been times when I started a new job and I wanted to quit but my wife encouraged me to stick with it and six months later I’d love it because I became better at it, stick with it. Thanks for your comment

  9. I think success goes beyond making a lot of money or being able to get the material things that one aims for. For me the true meaning of success not all about creating wealth but is measured by the number of lives you have touched and whose lives became better because of what you did. I will not be hypocritical and say that money does not matter to me. But what I am driving at is that for you to achieve real success you must be able to strike a balance between acquiring tangible things that you aim for and providing value to the people you meet on your way to achieving your goals.

Thanks for another thought provoking post Diego. I always love dropping by your site to for my regular dose of inspiration.

    • Thanks for a thought provoking comment Kathy! It’s always good to see you drop in. Definitely being able to help people is part of my definition of success. I like something I heard Will Smith say “if you’re not making someone else’s life better than you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better”. I’m glad you liked this post, all the best.
